Featured Natural: Devin

PC: What is your name, age, and how long have you been natural?
D: My name is Devin, I'm 18, and I've been natural for about two years.

PC: Why did you decide to go natural?
D: I actually decided to go natural because of my friends. They were close enough to me to have seen me natural, and they didn't understand why I hid my hair. I actually wore it curly to school on a dare, and after some of the reactions I got I decided to let the curls stay.

PC: How do you feel about your hair?
D: I wouldn't trade my hair for anyone else's in the world. It's big and kooky and very appropriate for me. I can't believe I spent so much time trying to make it look like everyone else's!

PC: What products do you use?
D: Honestly, I'm a bit frugal (or cheap), so I just use Suave Humectant Shampoo and Conditioner. It's never led me wrong! I owe the most to Africa's Best Hair Oil and Palmer's Olive Oil Gro Therapy. They keep my hair healthy, strong and I often get compliments about it smelling nice, which is both lovely and a bit creepy. Every now and then I use Twisted Sista products. They work just as well, but I find myself always coming back to the hair oil.

PC: What is your hair care routine?
D: I wash and condition my hair every day, and it never dries out or gets too oily. After I get out of the shower, I throw it up in a towel while I get ready, take it off when my hair is still a bit damp and apply a palm full of Africa's Best. The key is making sure it gets everywhere - roots, ends and everything in between. I let it continue to dry, and then pick it out to shape it. When I sleep, I toss it up in a hair tie to keep it from tangling.

PC: What are your favorite hairstyles?
D: Most of my days are spent rocking an afro, but when I don't feel like picking everything out, I toss my hair up in a ponytail and add a scarf for flair.

PC: What has been the hardest part of your natural hair journey?
D: I think finding what works for me was the hardest.  There were definitely a few awkward months where I wasn't used to going all out with my natural hair, so the styles I tried didn't fit me at all. I had it in an awful side ponytail for a minute - those were tough times.

PC: What was your proudest natural moment?
D: I have a few of them! Being an actress, it's nice to have agents and directors comment on how unique my look is. Also, having random strangers give me "oohs" and "aahs" is a nice confidence boost. Still, my proudest natural moment is when my younger sister decided to go back to natural because I changed my hair. It's nice to see her with a little lion mane, not to mention she's spending less time worrying about her hair and more time hanging out with me.

PC: What tips/suggestions do you have for other naturals?
D: If you're going to go natural, go for it! The transition periods may be awkward, but it's totally worth it when your hair is healthy, eye catching and completely you. You were born with your hair for a reason - rock it out.
