Transitioning Curls Feature

Tuesday, January 10, 2012
Hey everyone! So I've recently written up another feature - a feature for those who are transitioning, or who already have transitioned and would like to share their transitioning story.

It started when a friend of mine, who is wearing braided extensions, saw my natural hair and said to me, "I wish I could be natural." I asked her, "Why can't you be?" She said that she tried to grow out her relaxer, but she found it difficult to deal with both textures, gave up, and relaxed the new growth again. Her story prompted me to create a feature for those who have transitioned from relaxed to natural successfully. This in turn can help others who are struggling in their transition, just like my friend.

I, unfortunately, did not transition in the best way. You can read more about my transition here. Basically, I wore extension braids or twists, flatironed the new growth when it wasn't under extensions, caused breakage by not detangling my hair gently, and ended up with shorter hair then I did before! After taking out my extension braids around February 2010, I combed out my hair and caused so much breakage that I assume I broke off the last bit of relaxed hair. This is when I declared myself fully "natural."

I don't want others to transition the way I did, at all!

If you have a successful transitioning story, please take part in this new feature! You can find the interview questions here. Send your feature to precious@precious-curls.com. Please help me help my friend, and others who are thinking about transitioning and don't know how to go about it. Looking forward to hearing from you!
