Mini Twists With Cornrows

Friday, September 2, 2011

This style was inspired by little Kaela of Baby Bella Hair. Thanks to her mom Tracey for allowing me to mimick this hairstyle!

As you all know, I'm in college now and for the first few weeks of getting oriented I wanted to do something very low-maintenance for my hair. This inspired style came in great time!

Techniques Involved:

Two-strand twisting

Cornrowing

The first thing I did was part the front section of my hair that I wanted to use for the cornrows. I clipped that out of the way. Then I used very small sections of hair and made two-strand twists. This took me roughly 5 hours to do on my medium-length hair.

After the two-strand twisting was done, I made some cornrows in the front of my hair. I began twisting about a quarter of an inch after the cornrow (after running out of hair to "attach" to the scalp.)

Here is how I will preserve my mini twists every night:

I will use a ponytail holder and make a low pony.

Then I will band the pony.

I'll tuck the banded pony under, securing it with a clip. That way the hair isn't flipping up (unless you want it to of course, then you can clip it above.)

Finally I will of course cover my twists at night with a satin scarf.

I plan to make this style last for about a month.

Hey precious,
Hope u are settling well in College
I love this style on you. Your hair has grown so much!
I wish I could do mini twists. They make my hair tangle. I think the banding method will curb that problem.

Aww that's too bad Tinuke. I think keeping the hair stretched definitely reduces the tangles and fairy knots I experience. Also twisting all the way instead of leaving the ends loose helps.

P, I really commend you for styling your own hair. I can not cornrow my own hair lol...Maybe I sure & have you tell me what you think. You did every well. Peace & Blessings ;-)

I'm sorry, did you say you cornrowed your OWN hair?! My new hair hero! Gotta give it up just on g.p.! And love the style, I wish I could do that on my own hair :)

Lol, thanks KeeKee and GDL! It takes plenty of practice, you'll get it! I'll have to make a vid tutorial in the future. I was forced to learn to braid/twist my own hair because my mom got tired of always doing it for me!

Precious, I have so much admiration for you and your ability to do your own hair!! The cornrows look great. Do you have to use a bunch of mirrors or can you do them by "feel"?

Awww! i this style!!! Twists are my favorite on Kae! and they look awesome on you too!

Precious @ Precious-Curls.com said...

Mama M, both! I can use two mirrors so that I can see the back but for these twists I didn't have two mirrors, so I did have to "feel."

Thanks Tracey! The style is low maintenance and should last me a good month! Hope you and your girls enjoy my style as much as I'm enjoying Kae's :)
