Little Natural: Baby O

Meet Baby O, a little natural from the blog Intermittent Babbling!

Thank you for this opportunity!  I'm so very excited to be sharing Baby O's routine! Baby O is 2 years old.

PC: What products do you use on your little natural?

- CUSH Mango Babassu shampoo bar
- Shea Moisture Organic Hold & Shine Hair Moisture MistCoconut & Hibiscus

PC: What is your little natural's hair care routine?

Our routine is pretty simple.  I wash her hair one to two times a week, it all depends on how hard she’s played at daycare and what has ended up in her hair from the day.
To shampoo Baby O’s hair I use CUSH Mango Babassu shampoo bar (I adore this—it leaves her hair so clean and silky feeling).  In the morning I moisturize her hair, but how I moisturize depends on how she’s wearing it.  If it’s free I’ll use my shea butter mix (shea butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil and avocado oil), if it’s in a style I can’t easily “butter” up, then I’ll use Shea Moisture Organic Hold & Shine Hair Moisture Mist Coconut & Hibiscus.  In the evening I follow the same moisturizing routine as in the morning, after bath time.  I just did a warm oil treatment (she’s too young for hot oil) of jojoba and olive oil.  When I do a conditioning treatment for Baby O I mash up an avocado and mix in some coconut milk and apply it, then put a plastic grocery sack over her hair and let her run around for 20-30 minutes.

PC: What are some of your little natural's favorite hairstyles?

Since her hair is so short, I leave her hair free pretty often.  I just did my first cornrow style, but usually I do twists or individual plaits.  I’ve only been doing Baby O’s hair for about six months, so I love anything simple and easy—but I’m trying more challenging styles. Of course Baby O loves the beaded styles and the more beads there are the happier she is!

PC: How does your little natural feel about her hair?

I asked Baby O how she felt about her hair and she said "Good!" She LOVES the color of her hair, the styles Mommy does and when I asked her if she likes when people touch her hair she said "NO!" She tells me that her hair is "GORGEOUS!" and jumps up and down while smiling when she tells me that!

PC: What tips/suggestions do you have for parents of little naturals?

My tips are geared towards people that don't have previous experience with natural African American hair before. Learning how to care for natural hair is definitely a process. Once you get the basics and learn what products and styles work best with your child's hair, it's all down hill from there. Just because someone uses one line of products and gets great results doesn't mean you'll get the same results. Learning how to style and take care of natural curls takes a minute, but don't ever give up! It's so satisfying for me to look at my daughter's freshly styled head and know I did that!

Thank you so much for sharing Baby O's regime! She is too cute! Always great to see mommies making an effort to learn more about natural hair care. You can follow their African-American hair care learning journey on Intermittent Babbling here!
